NSCH Codebooks

The DRC’s codebooks provide the SAS, SPSS and Stata syntax and documentation used to create National Survey of Children's Health indicators and subgroups displayed on the DRC’s interactive data query. The codebooks below were developed by the Data Resource Center to assist with data analysis of the NSCH. If you have additional questions, please submit them on the ask a question page.

When using the codebooks created by the CAHMI DRC, please be sure to use the following citation in any publication, report or peer-reviewed journal article:

Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative (CAHMI) [Year of publication]. [YEAR] National Survey of Children’s Health: Child and Family Health Measures, National Performance and Outcome Measures, and Subgroups, [format eg. SAS/SPSS/Stata] Codebook, Version [insert version], Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health supported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB). Retrieved [mm/dd/yy] from childhealthdata.org

We encourage you to keep us informed about your publications and presentations based on these data. To facilitate that, the CAHMI will be contacting you in a few months. Since the main mission of the Data Resource Center is to facilitate dissemination and utilization of the results of the National Surveys, we are always delighted to be able to identify real-life examples of how planners, families, grant writers, researchers, and child health policy advocates are using survey results to promote better health and improve access to and quality of children’s health care services.

Attention! HRSA’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau and the U.S. Census Bureau revised imputation and weighting by race and ethnicity for the 2021 and 2022 NSCH. In 2024, public use files with the newly adjusted weights will be available on the U.S. Census Bureau’s website.

The updated weights have been applied to the 2022 NSCH DRC constructed dataset and the 2022 and 2021-2022 NSCH data query findings. Updated weights have not been applied to prior DRC datasets and data query findings. Due to the imputation and weighting changes, the estimates produced using the U.S. Census Bureau’s public use files with the new weights are not directly comparable to these prior DRC data query and DRC constructed datasets. The DRC indicators and measures displayed on the interactive data from prior years can be recreated with updated weights by applying the codes available in the DRC codebook(s) to updated public use files provided on the U.S.Census Bureau’s website.
